Last year, I trained with a group of Fire Fighters. These men were often first onto an Emergency scene and they shared with me one of their safety phrases....no gloves...no love. You need to protect yourself!
Why Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is Important in First Aid
First aid is an important aspect of emergency response that aims to provide immediate care to someone who has been injured or is ill. However, it's important to remember that first aid responders are also at risk of being exposed to potential hazards, such as bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, and other infectious materials. This is where personal protective equipment (PPE) comes into play. In this article, we'll discuss why PPE is important in first aid.
Protection Against Infection
The primary purpose of PPE is to protect first aid responders from infection. During a first aid response, bodily fluids such as blood, saliva, and vomit can be present, all of which can potentially transmit infections like HIV, Hepatitis B and C, and COVID-19. PPE helps to minimize the risk of exposure to such infectious agents by creating a barrier between the responder and the patient's bodily fluids.
Prevention of Cross-Contamination
PPE also helps to prevent cross-contamination between different patients. In some cases, first aid responders may be required to attend to multiple patients at once. By wearing PPE, responders can prevent the transfer of bacteria and other infectious agents from one patient to another.
Reduced Risk of Injury
First aid responders may encounter situations where they need to lift or move a patient. PPE such as gloves and back braces can help reduce the risk of injury to the responder during such activities.
Regulatory Compliance
Using PPE in first aid also helps to ensure compliance with relevant regulatory bodies. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, for example, require employers to provide PPE to their employees and to ensure that it is used properly.
Types of PPE Used in First Aid
The specific PPE used in first aid may vary depending on the type of emergency and level of risk involved. Some common types of PPE used in first aid include:
gloves
face shields
masks
gowns
eye protection
pocket mask when performing breaths during CPR
REMEMBER
In addition to PPE, it's important to remember other safety measures like hand hygiene and safe disposal of contaminated materials.
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER REMOVING GLOVES!!
There are micro-tears in gloves that may leak contaminants.
Conclusion
In summary, PPE is an essential component of first aid response that helps protect responders from infection, prevent cross-contamination, reduce the risk of injury, and ensure regulatory compliance. By understanding the importance of PPE in first aid, responders can take appropriate steps to protect themselves and those they are trying to help.
