I'm Pretty Sure I Should Pee on You? Tips For a Jellyfish Sting.

Updated: Aug 11, 2023

Peeing on a jelly fish sting is an old wives tale!! Don't do it!

A jellyfish sting can be painful and uncomfortable!

Here are the steps for providing first aid for a jellyfish sting:

Step 1: Remove any tentacles.

If tentacles are present, carefully remove them with a pair of tweezers or the edge of a credit card. Be careful not to touch the tentacles with your bare hands, as this can cause more stinging.

Step 2: Rinse the affected area with vinegar.

Rinse the affected area with vinegar for at least 30 seconds to help neutralize the sting. If vinegar is not available, use salt water.

Step 3: Soak the affected area in hot water.

Soak the affected area in hot water for 20 to 45 minutes. Use water that is as hot as the person can tolerate. The heat can help relieve pain and break down any remaining toxins from the sting.

Step 4: Apply a topical pain reliever.

Apply a topical pain reliever, such as lidocaine or aloe vera gel, to help relieve pain and reduce swelling.

Step 5: Take an over-the-counter pain reliever.

Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, to help relieve pain and reduce inflammation.

Step 6: Monitor for signs of an allergic reaction.

Monitor the person for signs of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or hives. If an allergic reaction occurs, seek medical attention immediately.
