Deck the Halls (Safely): How to Avoid Turning Your Home into a Holiday Hazard!

Nothing says “holiday season” like twinkling lights, festive decorations, and that one uncle who insists on climbing up the ladder to put lights on the roof. But before you turn your home into a winter wonderland, let’s talk safety. After all, Santa won’t be impressed if you end up in a cast.

  • The Great Ladder Debate: If you’re going up high, make sure your ladder is stable, and maybe avoid those “one-legged balancing acts.” If in doubt, recruit a buddy (or consider a slightly lower light display).

  • Tame the Tangle of Lights: Inspect all lights before using them. Frayed wires or burnt-out bulbs are invitations for a fire hazard. And as tempting as it is to connect every string of lights into one outlet… maybe don’t.

  • Fireplace Precautions: Stockings over the fireplace look great, but maybe wait until after the fire is out. No one wants “roasting stockings by the open fire.”

  • Tree Safety 101: If you’re a real-tree person, keep it watered! A dry tree is more flammable than you’d think. And if it starts shedding more needles than your cat sheds fur, it might be time to say goodbye.

Decorating for the holidays should bring joy, not a trip to the ER. With a few simple precautions, you can turn your home into a safe and cozy festive haven – just don’t forget to leave space for the presents!
