Blue to the SKY, Orange to the THIGH...How to use an EpiPen

Updated: Aug 11, 2023

Epinephrine auto-injectors, commonly known as EpiPens, are used to treat severe allergic reactions or anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention. If you or someone you know has been prescribed an EpiPen, it's important to know how to use it correctly.

Here are the steps for using an EpiPen:

Step 1: Remove the EpiPen from its case.

Remove the EpiPen from its case and make sure the solution in the viewing window is clear. Check the expiration date and make sure it has not expired.

Step 2: Remove the safety cap.

Hold the EpiPen firmly with the orange tip pointing downward. Use your other hand to remove the blue safety cap by pulling it straight off.

Step 3: Inject the needle.

Place the orange tip of the EpiPen against the middle of the outer thigh, through clothing if necessary. Swing the EpiPen firmly into the thigh until it clicks. Hold the EpiPen in place for 3 seconds to ensure that all the medication is delivered.

Step 4: Seek medical attention.

Call emergency medical services immediately after using the EpiPen, even if symptoms improve. Anaphylaxis can cause the person's symptoms to return or worsen, and additional treatment may be needed.

Step 5: Dispose of the used EpiPen.

After using the EpiPen, dispose of it in a sharps container or follow your local guidelines for medical waste disposal. Best practice is to give it to EMS when they arrive or bring to hospital with you, they will assist with disposal.

It's important to note that an EpiPen is a temporary treatment for anaphylaxis and does not replace the need for emergency medical attention. If you or someone you know experiences anaphylaxis, seek immediate medical attention even if symptoms improve after using an EpiPen.
